Chapter Nine

They hashed out a plan. Theo would leave and stash his bike somewhere, then return in his bird form. If they could lull the killer into a false sense of security, maybe they would try to attack her outright. He’d keep a watch from the trees and spend the night with her, sneaking into the cottage. The weather had started to turn, and the weatherman had forecasted snow. He wasn’t looking forward to the cold. A hawk would be an unusual sight if someone spied him. He told her he’d discovered a good vantage spot.

Ava needed to return to work, keeping her routine close to normal, even if she didn’t like the thought. Neither of them liked the plan, but it was the best one they had. She touched her lips, remembering their kisses. The way his body pushed into hers. Ava crossed her legs. The ache was good, but the way her heart beat a little faster at the thought of him was better. It was more than sex, but was she ready to say the words to him?

She pushed the stray thought to the furthest corners of her mind. Not a good time to think about any possible futures with him. Not when she needed to focus on the here and now. The killer knew her schedule, had been following her for a while, and she hadn’t known. She’d been completely oblivious.

Someone wanted her dead but hadn’t come after her themselves. Who was she to guess the inner workings of a killer? She didn’t want to understand them.

“Do you want to tell me what’s going on?” Han stood somewhere behind her, his tone disapproving.

She didn’t bother to glance up from her tablet, scrolling through the notes. “I guess Callie spilled the beans about what she saw?”

“About the naked man in your kitchen? She might have mentioned it. She also said he was the agent who came here. I thought you hated the SPF.”

Ava wanted to tell him the truth, but Theo had advised against it. She’d argued the fact about preparing them against a killer. Theo thought dragging more people into the situation was ill-advised. Too many moving parts made everything complicated. “An old boyfriend I knew him before he became an agent.” She tapped the tablet. “I helped him with a case, and we sort of fell into bed together.”

The cat shifter didn’t move from his place at the door, and she glanced up to see his unreadable expression. She didn’t have a clue if he believed her or not. “This doesn’t sound like you. We’re worried about you.”

“You’ve known me all of a couple of months. You don’t know anything about me besides how I like my coffee. I need both of you to do your jobs. Theo’s gone back to work, and I don’t know when I’m seeing him again.” She turned her attention back to the tablet. Ava schooled her face into icy disinterest. “Did you hand the results of the tests over to the police?”

He sighed.
